FAQ – Specialty Filter Coffee

What's the difference between filter coffee and espresso?

Filter coffee is distinguished by its gentle and prolonged extraction, typically through gravity or immersion, which produces a light, aromatic, and clear cup that highlights fruity and floral notes. Espresso, on the other hand, uses rapid pressurized extraction for a more concentrated and bold profile. To learn more about pour-over methods, check out our complete guide on slow coffee.

Can I use these filter coffees with other methods?

Absolutely! While designed for pour-over methods (V60, Chemex, French press, dripper), many of our filter coffees also work beautifully as cold brew for cold infusion, or even as espresso for lovers of bright acidity and fruity profiles. Supernova, for example, is versatile and also shines as espresso.

How do I preserve the freshness of my filter coffee beans?

To preserve the delicate aromas of your filter coffee, store your beans in an airtight container, away from light, moisture, and heat. Opt for smaller quantities (300g to 500g) to consume within 3 to 4 weeks of roasting, when the aromas are at their peak.

What grind size should I choose for my brewing method?

For optimal filter coffee, the grind depends on your equipment:

  • V60, automatic dripper: medium-fine grind (like granulated sugar)
  • Chemex: medium-coarse grind (like sea salt)
  • French press: coarse grind (like coarse sea salt)
  • Aeropress: medium to fine grind depending on recipe
  • Cold brew: coarse grind for prolonged infusion

If you order pre-ground, specify your method. For optimal freshness, we recommend buying whole beans and grinding just before brewing. Discover our grinders in the equipment section.

Do you offer decaffeinated filter coffee?

Yes! Our Colombian decaf by Elias and Shady Bayter is excellent for pour-over methods. Decaffeinated using a natural water process (without chemical solvents), it retains all the aromatic richness and complexity of specialty filter coffee, with less than 0.1% caffeine.

What coffee-to-water ratio do you recommend for filter?

For balanced filter coffee, we recommend a ratio of 60 grams of coffee per liter of water (1:16.7 ratio), or about 15g of coffee for 250ml of water (one cup). Adjust according to your preferences: more coffee for more body, less for lighter brew. Water should be between 92-96°C for optimal aroma extraction.
