At 94 Celcius, we firmly believe that every action counts in reducing our ecological footprint. As a Montreal-based specialty coffee roaster, we're not only committed to bringing you exceptional coffee, we're also committed to protecting our planet. That's why we've implemented concrete solutions to guarantee carbon-neutral shipping. Through partnerships with Shopify Planet, Canada Post and Nationex, we reduce the environmental impact of every order placed on our website. Here's how we do it.

Shopify Planet: Environmental projects funded with every order

We have integrated Shopify Planet to our website so that every order contributes to sustainable initiatives. Shopify Planet funds projects that offset the carbon emissions generated by parcel shipping. These projects include:

  • Conservation of forests that naturally capture carbon.
  • The development of renewable energies to replace fossil fuels.
  • Innovative initiatives to reduce emissions in supply chains.

Every time you order from 94 Celcius, you're contributing to these efforts. So drinking your favorite coffee becomes a gesture for the environment.

Canada Post: Certified green shipments for a minimal footprint

Working with Canada PostWe ensure that all our shipments meet the highest environmental standards. Here's how it works:

  1. Green certification Every parcel shipped via Canada Post is covered by a carbon neutrality program.
  2. Carbon tax A portion of shipping costs is directly invested in carbon offset projects, such as reforestation and clean energy development.

This partnership enables us to offer an environmentally-friendly shipping service while maintaining a high level of efficiency for our customers.

Nationex: Electric delivery for Quebec's major cities

To go one step further, we have chosen Nationexa local carrier with an emphasis on eco-responsibility. Nationex uses electric vehicles for deliveries to major Quebec cities such as Montreal, Quebec City and Laval. This choice enables us to considerably reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with urban transport.

Why Nationex?

  • An ever-expanding fleet of electric vehicles.
  • Optimized logistics to reduce unnecessary journeys.
  • Local expertise aligned with our mission of sustainability.

With Nationex, we combine speed, reliability and respect for the environment.

Why aren't our bags compostable or recyclable yet?

Many of you have asked us why our coffee bags aren't recyclable or compostable. The answer is simple: it's complicated. In Quebec, none of the materials currently used to package coffee are considered recyclable or compostable under current standards.

We could opt for a greenwashing by inviting you to compost our bags, but this would be misleading. In reality, even if our bags were placed in the compost bin, they would end up in the garbage can at the sorting center, as these materials are not accepted by the local facilities. What's more, even so-called recyclable single-layer now end up in landfill. Why is this? Because there are currently no buyers willing to revalue this type of product, making recycling impossible despite good intentions.

During our discussions with various levels of government, we were given a clearer guideline: Quebec will focus on recycling rather than composting by the end of 2024. This decision aims to improve infrastructure and create a viable market for recycling materials, including packaging such as coffee bags.

We are keeping a close eye on the evolution of these regulations and are preparing to align ourselves with the new standards as soon as they are in place. Recyclable coffee bags should become the norm in the near future, and we are committed to following this trend as soon as possible.

In the meantime, we remain transparent in our approach and refuse to compromise our values by adopting solutions that are not truly sustainable. Your questions and support inspire us to continue exploring solutions that will have a real impact on the environment, without falling into the trap of misleading appearances. Together, we are moving towards a future where every action, however small, will count.
